TRADES: Deck Staining & Refinishing | Exterior Painting | Wood Repair
Pressure Washing, Wood Repairs & Arborcoat Stain Application
- Pressure washed the entire deck surface, railings, and lattice to remove sun fading, mildew, and weathered gray wood.
- Completed minor wood repairs and secured weakened sections to restore structural stability before staining.
- Sprayed and back-brushed Benjamin Moore Arborcoat in a Natural Tone across all deck boards, railings, and lattice for even absorption and a consistent finish.
Why This Deck Needed a Full Cleaning Before Stain
- The deck had significant UV fading and weathering that turned the wood gray. Pressure washing removed the damaged surface layer and opened the grain for better stain penetration.
- Arborcoat was applied by spraying first for speed and coverage, then back-brushing to work the stain into the wood grain. This technique ensures even absorption and eliminates pooling or lap marks.
- This homeowner uses PaintWerks for seasonal exterior maintenance, including periodic deck cleaning and re-staining to protect the wood and maintain appearance year over year.
Refreshed Natural Wood Tone Across Every Surface
PaintWerks transformed the deck from faded, gray boards to a clean, refreshed natural wood tone with even color across every surface. Minor structural repairs were completed, and all railings and lattice received the same treatment for a consistent look throughout. The Arborcoat finish provides UV protection and moisture resistance to extend the life of the wood between maintenance cycles. Another quality result for a loyal residential painting client in Clintonville, one of Columbus’s most established neighborhoods.

Deck Staining & Maintenance Questions
How often should I restain my deck in Ohio?
Most wood decks in Central Ohio need restaining every 2 to 3 years depending on sun exposure, foot traffic, and the product used. South-facing decks fade faster. A quality penetrating stain like Benjamin Moore Arborcoat lasts longer than film-forming products because it soaks into the grain rather than sitting on top. If water stops beading on your deck boards, it is time to clean and restain. PaintWerks offers seasonal deck maintenance for homeowners who want to keep their deck protected year over year. Call 614-582-4227 for a free estimate.
Should I pressure wash my deck before staining?
Yes. Stain will not penetrate or bond properly to wood that has dirt, mildew, or a gray oxidized surface layer. Pressure washing removes all of that and opens the wood grain for better absorption. The key is using the right PSI for the wood species. Too much pressure damages softwoods like pine and cedar. Too little leaves behind the gray layer and the stain sits on top instead of soaking in. We adjust pressure and nozzle distance based on the condition of the wood.
How much does deck staining cost in Columbus?
Deck staining in the Columbus area typically runs $2 to $5 per square foot for cleaning, prep, and stain application. Smaller decks with railings and lattice may cost more per square foot because of the detail work involved. Minor wood repairs, board replacement, and structural fixes are quoted separately. We provide a written estimate that breaks down every line item. No deposit required. See our full deck staining and refinishing services or call 614-582-4227.
