LOCATION: Lewis Center, Ohio
PROJECT TYPE: Master bathroom shower remodel with custom tile, built-in niche, quartz accents, and semi-frameless glass enclosure
TRADES: Tile Installation | Drywall Repair | Interior Painting | Bathroom Remodeling
Custom Tile Shower, Niche & Semi-Frameless Glass Enclosure
- Demoed the existing white tile shower down to the studs, removing all tile, backer board, the old framed glass door, and the shower base to expose the framing and plumbing for a full rebuild.
- Installed GoBoard waterproofing on all shower walls as the tile substrate. GoBoard is a waterproof, vapor-tight foam backer that eliminates the need for a separate membrane and provides a solid, flat surface for tile.
- Set large format porcelain wall tile in a brick lay pattern from the shower floor to the ceiling line on all three walls. Tile was set with proper thinset coverage using a laser level and tile spacers to maintain straight, consistent grout lines throughout.
- Built a custom recessed shower niche with a metal shelf and hexagon mosaic tile backing that matches the shower floor. The niche was framed into the wall cavity, waterproofed, and tiled to sit flush with the surrounding wall tile.
- Installed hexagon mosaic porcelain tile on the shower floor, sloped to the center drain. The mosaic pattern matches the niche detail for a cohesive design throughout the wet area.
- Finished the shower curb with a quartz cap for a clean, durable edge that ties the shower to the adjacent soaking tub. Schluter edge trim was used at all tile transitions for sharp, finished edges.
- Extended the wall tile as a wainscot around the soaking tub surround and window wall to match the shower and create a unified look across the entire wet area of the bathroom.
- Installed a semi-frameless glass shower enclosure with a hinged door and fixed panel. The glass sits on the quartz curb cap and ties into the half wall separating the shower from the tub.
- Patched and repaired the floor tile where the old shower base met the existing bathroom floor. Replaced rotted baseboard around the bathroom.
- Painted the bathroom walls and ceiling to complete the remodel with a fresh, clean finish.
Why Waterproofing and Substrate Prep Matter
- The original shower had standard cement backer board with no waterproof membrane behind the tile. Over time, moisture worked through the grout joints and into the wall cavity. By the time the tile came off, the framing behind the shower valve wall showed early signs of moisture damage.
- GoBoard eliminates that failure point. It is waterproof on its own and does not require a separate membrane layer. Every seam gets taped and sealed before tile goes on. The result is a fully waterproofed shower cavity that protects the framing and subfloor behind it.
- The shower floor required proper slope to the center drain. Hexagon mosaic tile conforms to the slope better than large format tile because the smaller pieces follow the grade without lippage. This is why mosaic is the standard for shower floors in custom bathroom remodels.
- The quartz curb cap and Schluter edge trim are details that separate a professional tile installation from a DIY job. They protect the exposed edges of the tile from chipping, give the shower a finished look, and make the glass enclosure installation cleaner because the glass sits on a flat, level surface.

Shower Remodeling Questions
How much does a shower remodel cost in Lewis Center, Ohio?
A full shower remodel in the Lewis Center and Columbus area typically ranges from $5,000 to $15,000 depending on the size of the shower, tile selections, whether the shower base or pan is replaced, and whether a glass enclosure is included. Custom tile work with built-in niches, quartz accents, and semi-frameless glass falls on the higher end. PaintWerks provides a detailed written estimate that breaks down every line item so you know exactly what you are paying for. No deposit required. Call 614-582-4227 for a free estimate.
What is GoBoard and why use it instead of cement board?
GoBoard is a waterproof foam tile backer that replaces traditional cement board in shower applications. Unlike cement board, GoBoard is waterproof on its own and does not require a separate membrane like RedGard or Kerdi behind it. That means fewer failure points and faster installation. It is lighter, easier to cut, and creates a flat, stable surface for tile installation. PaintWerks uses GoBoard on shower remodels where a reliable waterproof substrate is critical to protecting the framing and subfloor behind the tile for the long term.
Can you remodel just the shower without redoing the whole bathroom?
Yes. This Lewis Center project was a shower-focused remodel. The existing soaking tub stayed in place. We demoed the shower, rebuilt it with GoBoard waterproofing, custom tile, a built-in niche, quartz curb cap, and semi-frameless glass, then extended the tile as a wainscot around the tub surround to tie everything together. The bathroom got painted and the baseboard was replaced, but the vanity, toilet, and tub were not part of the scope. PaintWerks handles targeted bathroom remodels as well as full gut renovations.
