Demo, Framing, Drywall & Paint on a 935 SQ FT Church Renovation
- Demolished existing VCT flooring across the full 935 sq ft room using a walk-behind floor scraper to remove the tile and adhesive down to the concrete slab.
- Removed four existing concrete masonry unit (CMU) window sections and prepped the openings for new framing and infill.
- Framed all perimeter walls with steel studs, including vaulted side walls that transition from 10 feet at the perimeter to 17 feet at the ridge line. Window wall framed with 2×6 studs, remaining walls with 2×4.
- Installed batt insulation on all four perimeter walls, R-19 at the window wall, to meet the thermal and acoustic specifications for the space.
- Installed 450 sq ft of plywood backing on the face of the studs under drywall at designated locations for future mirror and equipment mounting.
- Hung 5/8″ Type X drywall throughout the room, including the vaulted ceiling sections. STC 55 acoustic assembly with double-layer drywall and resilient channel on designated walls.
- Completed full Level 5 drywall finish across all wall and ceiling surfaces using a scissor lift for the high vaulted sections. Every seam, fastener, and corner received multiple coats and full skim to achieve a smooth, uniform surface ready for paint.
- Removed recessed light fixtures before painting and reinstalled after final coats were applied.
- Primed and painted all walls and ceilings with Sherwin-Williams Duration. Walls finished in Stardew (SW 9138). Doors and frames painted to match the spec.
Working a Vaulted Space From Slab to Final Coat
- The vaulted ceiling in this room runs from 10 feet at the side walls to 17 feet at the ridge. Every phase of the project required scissor lift access for the upper wall sections, ceiling transitions, and the ridge line. Framing, hanging, finishing, and painting all had to be sequenced around the lift.
- Level 5 finish was specified for this space. That means full skim coat over the entire surface after standard taping and mudding, not just the joints and fasteners. On walls this tall with vaulted angles, the skim work has to be consistent from floor to ceiling or every imperfection shows under the recessed lighting.
- The STC 55 acoustic rating required double-layer drywall with resilient channel on designated walls. This assembly controls sound transmission between the room and adjacent spaces, which matters in a facility where multiple programs run simultaneously.
- Coordination with the general contractor and other trades was ongoing throughout the project. Electrical, HVAC, and fire protection were roughed in by others before drywall went up, and sequencing had to stay tight to keep the overall build schedule on track. This is the same type of multi-trade coordination PaintWerks manages on projects where we serve as commercial general contractor.
Clean Finish on a Complex Commercial Build
PaintWerks completed the full demo-to-paint scope on a 935 sq ft church renovation at One Church in Gahanna with 17-foot vaulted ceilings. Steel stud framing, insulation, STC 55 drywall assembly, Level 5 finish, and Sherwin-Williams Duration paint delivered a smooth, uniform surface from floor to ridge line. The room was turned over ready for flooring and fixtures with clean walls, sharp lines, and zero punch list items on the drywall and paint. Whether we are managing the full project as a licensed general contractor or handling a specific scope within a larger build, the quality of the finished product is the same.

Commercial Drywall & Painting Questions
What is a Level 5 drywall finish and when is it required?
Level 5 is a full skim coat applied over the entire drywall surface after standard taping and mudding. It creates a perfectly uniform surface with no visible joint patterns, fastener marks, or texture differences under direct or angled lighting. It is typically specified in commercial spaces with recessed lighting, high ceilings, or glossy paint finishes where imperfections would be visible. PaintWerks handles commercial drywall finishing from Level 3 through Level 5 depending on the spec. Call 614-582-4227 for a free estimate.
What is an STC 55 wall assembly?
STC stands for Sound Transmission Class. An STC 55 rating means the wall assembly blocks enough sound that loud speech on the other side is barely audible. It is achieved with double-layer drywall, resilient channel, batt insulation, and proper sealing at all penetrations and perimeter edges. This assembly is common in churches, conference rooms, recording studios, and any space where sound isolation matters. PaintWerks builds commercial drywall assemblies to spec including acoustic and fire-rated systems.
Do you handle full commercial renovations or just specific trades?
Both. PaintWerks is a licensed Ohio commercial general contractor that manages full-scope buildouts from demo to certificate of occupancy. We also take on specific trade scopes like this One Church project where we handled demo, framing, insulation, drywall, and paint within a larger build managed by another GC. Whether you need one trade or the full project under one roof, we deliver the same quality and the same accountability. Call 614-582-4227 to discuss your project.
