Waterproofing for Showers and Wet Areas
Waterproofing is what keeps a shower from leaking into your walls and subfloor. Without it, water gets behind the tile, rots the framing, and leads to mold and expensive repairs. We treat every wet area like it needs to hold water - because it does.
We install Schluter-KERDI, RedGard, and other liquid-applied membranes depending on the application. Curbs, corners, niches, and benches all get wrapped and sealed before any tile goes on. Shower pans get proper slope to the drain so water moves where it should.
If you're doing a bathroom remodel, waterproofing is built into the process. We coordinate it with drywall, tile, and paint so the job flows in the right order.
Our Process
Waterproofing happens after framing and backer board, before tile. Here’s how we approach it.
Substrate Installation
Backer gets installed flat and tight to the framing. Some products - KERDI-BOARD, Wedi, GoBoard - ship with the membrane already bonded to them. Others - cement board, drywall - need membrane applied separately. We pick the right system for the job.
Waterproofing
For KERDI-BOARD, Wedi, and GoBoard, we seal the seams with the matching tape or band and they're watertight. For cement board and drywall, membrane goes over the entire surface - Schluter-KERDI, RedGard, Hydroban, or Laticrete. Corners, curbs, niches, and penetrations all get sealed either way.
Shower Pan & Drain
Shower floors get sloped toward the drain - 1/4" per foot. We use pre-sloped foam pans like Schluter-KERDI-SHOWER-ST or Wedi Fundo, or build mud beds on site for custom layouts. Drains like KERDI-DRAIN or KERDI-LINE bond directly into the waterproofing. Flood testing when needed to verify the pan holds water before tile.
Tile Installation
Once the waterproofing cures, tile goes on. Modified thinset over the membrane, tile set to layout, grouted, and sealed. The waterproof layer stays hidden behind the finished surface - out of sight but protecting the walls and floor for decades.
