Residential Services Columbus Ohio
Decoupling membranes go between the subfloor and tile to prevent cracks.
We install Schluter DITRA, DITRA-HEAT, and similar uncoupling systems for tile floors across Columbus and Central Ohio.
Decoupling Membranes
Tile cracks when the subfloor moves. Wood expands and contracts with humidity. Concrete develops hairline cracks that telegraph through the tile. A decoupling membrane absorbs that movement so the tile stays intact.
We install uncoupling membranes on wood subfloors, concrete slabs, and over existing flooring where appropriate. The membrane bonds to the substrate and the tile bonds to the membrane, but the two layers can move independently. That’s what prevents cracked tile and grout lines.
Decoupling membranes also provide waterproofing when installed correctly, which makes them ideal for bathrooms, kitchens, and entryways. We use Schluter DITRA, DITRA-HEAT for heated floors, and other systems depending on the application.
Do You Need One?
Not every tile job needs one, but many do. Wood subfloors over joists almost always benefit from uncoupling. Concrete slabs with cracks or control joints need protection. Heated floor systems require a compatible membrane. If you’re tiling over plywood, OSB, or questionable concrete, a decoupling membrane is cheap insurance against callbacks and cracked tile down the road.
Our Decoupling Membrane Process
Decoupling membrane installation is about prep and precision. The membrane itself is only as good as the subfloor underneath it and the bond you get on both sides. Skip a step or rush the thinset and you end up with hollow spots, failed bonds, or tile that cracks anyway. We follow manufacturer specs for thinset type, trowel size, and cure times. Here’s how we approach it.

Subfloor Prep
We check the subfloor for level, deflection, and any damage before anything else. Wood subfloors get checked for loose boards, squeaks, and proper fastening to the joists. If there's bounce or flex, we address it — add screws, sister joists, or add another layer of plywood if needed. Concrete gets inspected for cracks, moisture, and bond-breakers like curing compounds or sealers. Cracks get evaluated to see if they're structural or just shrinkage. Any high spots get ground down and low spots get filled. The subfloor has to be flat, stable, and clean before the membrane goes down.

Membrane Installation
We apply thinset to the subfloor and embed the membrane into it, working in sections to keep the thinset from skinning over. The right trowel notch matters — too small and you don't get enough coverage, too big and it squeezes up through the fleece. We press the membrane into the thinset and roll it to ensure full contact with no voids or air pockets underneath. Seams get overlapped or taped depending on the system. Inside corners, outside corners, and transitions get detailed with matching band pieces or preformed corners. Drains and penetrations get sealed with the appropriate accessories. Full bond across the entire surface is what makes the system work.

Tile Installation
Once the membrane is cured, tile goes down using the thinset specified for that system. We use the correct trowel size for the tile format and back-butter large format tiles to ensure full coverage. Tiles get set into the thinset and adjusted before it skins over. Spacers keep grout lines consistent across the floor. Expansion joints get placed at perimeters, transitions, and anywhere the manufacturer requires them. After the tile cures, we grout, clean the haze, and seal if specified. Final walkthrough checks for lippage, hollow spots, and clean grout lines before we call it done.
